What is a tattoo?
The origins of the military tattoo dates back to the 17th century. At that time,
the British Army, who was fighting in Belgium and the Netherlands would send out
drummers at night as a signal to the troops that it was time to get back to the
garrison. This process, known to the Dutch as 'doe den tap toe' or 'turn off the
tap' in English became more of a show as more instruments where added to the
drummers. With time, the original Dutch phrase turned into 'tattoo' rather than
'tap toe'. |
